Job Hunting Success in a Recession: Tip #2

Expand your network

If no one knows you're looking for a job then they can't help you find one. Join industry related groups online and start getting active. Many of these groups have job boards or send out new job listings exclusively to the group prior to posting on a public job board.

Online Social NetworkingLinkedIn Groups - I'm just going to assume that since you're job hunting you're on LinkedIn. Have you joined any industry related groups? Once you become an approved member of a group you can post to their disucssion boards and get updates. Be sure to edit your group settings to receive a daily or weekly digest of new threads that come through so you can stay on top of the action.

Facebook Groups - The same holds true for Facebook as it does for LinkedIn. Depending on your industry, Facebook may or may not be more relevant than LinkedIn, but it's worth taking 5 minutes to do a quick search.

Blogs - Search Technorati or Google Blog Search for top ranking industry blogs. From my experience even some of the "celebrity" or high-profile bloggers are very in-tune with the comments on their blogs. Show interest and insight and you'll get noticed. This is how one of the newest employees at my company just got hired.

What other networking sites do you use for job hunting? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.

While we handle the online aspect, you can focus on job interviews and networking in person. It's a diversified job search strategy that can yield better results.
