Tips for Recession Proofing Your Closet

I recently attended a lovely event hosted by Leslie Stewart of Be Love Savvy.  In pre-Valentine's day fashion, the event was filled with champagne, chocolate, and a special presentation on recession proofing your closet by Teresa Kuhl, a local personal stylist and owner of TRuEStyle.  She had some great tips, and I want to share my five favorites with all of you.

  1. Less is More:  Quality over quantity is the key for your wardrobe during a recession. Teresa recommends you have only pieces that you love and are made of quality fabrics. This ensures your pieces have the bandwidth to last more than one season.
  2. Stick to your List: Do you ever find it difficult getting dressed in the morning because you're lacking key wardrobe pieces?  If you do, write them down and keep a list.  When shopping *stick to the list*. Only buy what's on the list; it's that simple.
  3. Shop Season End: Take advantage of the amazing season end sales (up to 80% off) but only if the items are on your list.
  4. Purchase Versatile Pieces: When purchasing an item ask yourself, where am I wearing this? Can I wear it for more than one purpose? For example, a sassy cardigan that can be worn to the office and also on a weekend getaway to Napa.
  5. Host a Style Swap Party - Invite friends to bring wardrobe items that aren't working for them and have a style swap event. Donate the remainder of items to your favorite charity.

I thought I had to rule out shopping in these difficult economic times, but I now see that shopping wisely or getting creative with "shopping" (i.e. in my friends' closets) is always an option!  Have any recession proofing tips of your own?  Let us know in the comments.
